A love story of a middle aged couple.
Directed by Bela Sehgal (Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s sister) is different from the Shirin Farhad tales we have heard of. It isn’t a love story about teeny boppers or the handsome guy and a beautiful lady. This one is about the love story of a man and woman who appear to be in their forties.
A new trend is witnessed in bollywood. If a film is an action oriented – it has to be a Sikh or a Punjabi family background. And the safest bet now is even if there is an undercurrent of humour although it is a love story; it has to be about Parsis.
Thankfully, there is an attempt to portray the Parsi community, depicting realistic moments – just like they exist inIndia.
The film is about Farhad Pastakia (Boman Irani), a 45-year-old Parsi bachelor who is a salesman in a lingerie shop. Farhad has never fallen in love or to put it plainly has never found love.
Farhad hasn’t given up the idea of getting married. Nor does his mother, who is keen to get him married. Mummy dear drags him to see women and even enrolls his name in Parsi matrimony services.
He has a doting grandmother and a dominating mother. Life goes on as usual until one day Shirin Fuggawala (Farah Khan) walks into his shop. Shirin is an attractive 40-year-old Parsi female, a straight-forward Parsi trust secretary.
Shirin hits it off with Farhad from the start. Love blossoms between them, and then there are hindrances. All seems to be perfect until Farhad introduce Shirins to his mother. Farhad’s mother doesn’t approve of her son’s intimacy with Shirin as she has some hostility towards this lady.
Mercifully, in this film Boman and Farah are for once not misrepresenting or spoofing the Parsi community. Yet, it has its dose of melodrama with some well turned out dialogues.
Being a Parsi himself, Boman Irani acts his part naturally, and appears a fine lover boy. He is subdued and natural, while Farah tries too aggressively to fit into the role of a Parsi woman. Daisy Irani and Shammi are naturally gifted Parsis.
This isn’t an epic love tale, especially with those songs which slacken the pace of the film. It is hilarious in parts; and isn’t a heavy drama.
A fresh concept, though, might not be appreciated by the younger generation, should go well with viewers – 40 and above. Especially middle aged ones would enjoy this one.
